Dominik Szoboszlai has confirmed talks are progressing over a new contract at Liverpool but “no decision” has been reached over his future.
The Hungary captain has been Liverpool’s standout performer this season and is under contract at the club until the summer of 2028. The Premier League champions are keen to reward the midfielder’s progress since he arrived in a £60m deal from RB Leipzig in July 2023 and consider him a potential future captain. The 25-year-old insists he would be happy to stay at Anfield with the caveat that there is always uncertainty in football.
“There are always talks,” Szoboszlai said. “You guys in the media make a lot for the people [public] and keep on going because that’s your job. There have been talks but, for sure, not any decision has been made. There is always progress but no decision has been made and I’ll just keep on going every week, every training, giving my best for the team, for the fans. Let’s see what is going to happen in the future.”
Liverpool, who also want to extend Ryan Gravenberch’s deal, have had several contract issues recently, with Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving on a free for Real Madrid and Ibrahima Konaté approaching the end of his deal at the end of the season. Asked whether he was happy at Liverpool, Szoboszlai added: “Of course I am happy here but you know how football works and that is something everybody has to take into account.”
Arne Slot’s team visit Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday, when there could be a swift return for Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has spent the past five weeks at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. Szoboszlai said Salah will resume penalty duties for Liverpool once he returns to the squad, with the midfielder having missed one in Saturday’s draw against Burnley. “If he comes back he is the first penalty taker but until he comes back I’m the first penalty taker,” Szoboszlai confirmed. “He will give me some advice on what to think about when you miss one as he’s missed a couple of times, but he keeps on going and forgets what has happened.”
The penalty miss capped an awkward week for the Hungary international, who was accused by Barnsley head coach Conor Hourihane of being disrespectful in Liverpool’s FA Cup win over the League One side. Szoboszlai, however, denies that was the case and insisted the slip that gifted Barnsley their consolation was a genuine error. He explained: “For me, personally, it’s a tough one. I made a mistake against Barnsley but I have to make it clear it wasn’t disrespectful in my opinion and I would do the same against Arsenal, [Manchester] City and against Chelsea as well. I didn’t want to give it back to [goalkeeper] Giorgi [Mamardashvili]. I wanted to keep going but I tried to pretend that was playing it back, just to make it clear.
“Against Burnley I missed a penalty but I’m going to keep on going, I’m going to take the next one and I’m going to score I’m pretty sure.”
